What buyers searched for that Joy Pipe could have answered

Joy Pipe still gets real inquiries through its website. With almost no search visibility, that tells us buyers already look for suppliers online, and some find Joy Pipe even though the site gives Google very little to work with.

These are small numbers next to consumer searches, but the people behind them are engineers, buyers and distributors pricing real orders. The competition is beatable, too. Sites with weaker link profiles than Joy Pipe’s hold page-one spots, and the most visible site in this space is a pipe exporter in Henan, China.

AI tools already read these sites, and they repeat what each site says about itself. Asked for cost-effective premium connections in Houston, ChatGPT named HIS first. Asked for API-licensed coupling makers, it listed Texas Couplings but said it would ask for a current certificate, and it left Joy Pipe off the list as a distributor.

We connected Search Console to joypipe.com this month. So far it has filled in two days, October 4 and 5: 218 appearances in Google results across about 70 different searches, one click, from someone searching “joy pipe,” and an average position of about 30, which is page three. Search Console usually fills in up to 16 months of history in the days after a site is connected, and we’ll update these numbers when it does.

Google already connects Joy Pipe to the right searches. It doesn’t rank the site high enough to be seen, most likely because the pages give it so little to go on. Most clicks go to the first few results.

Cost per click is what advertisers pay Google for one visit from a search, so it’s a fair stand-in for what that visit is worth to the companies already buying it. “API threading” costs about $17 a click, the most in this set.

Keyword tools undercount a market like this one. The page that ranks first for a term usually ranks for dozens of size, grade and spelling variations too. Ahrefs estimates the top page for “casing size chart,” a 90-search term, gets about 300 visits a month. And in its first two days, Search Console showed joypipe.com for about 70 different searches, many too specific for keyword tools to measure, such as “custom casing coupling j55” and “k55 tubing coupling supply.”

Connection names get searched by name. VAM TOP, a competitor’s premium connection, draws about 200 US searches a month and 700 worldwide. HIS’s connection names don’t register yet, and today their details live in PDF brochures.

Most of this demand sits outside the US. Joy Pipe already says it serves customers abroad, HIS describes itself as serving Houston and international buyers, and Search Console’s first two days included two Spanish searches for the best OCTG suppliers in the United States, where Joy Pipe came up third and sixth.

Link strength, the 0-to-100 score Ahrefs gives a site based on who links to it, doesn’t explain the gap. STL Pipe & Supply scores 6 to Joy Pipe’s 12 and ranks for 68 product searches. Tex-Isle Supply has the same score as Joy Pipe and holds the top two results for “OCTG supplier.” Those sites rank because their pages describe products in detail.

Four of the top ten have weaker link profiles than Joy Pipe. One of the ten is a directory, which means a listing there puts a company on page one without ranking its own site.

The most visible site in the set is Octal Steel, a pipe exporter in Henan, China. It ranks for 1,309 US searches with pages that explain OCTG grades, threads and coupling dimensions, and AI tools cite it 1,296 times.

More buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI for a shortlist before they search. Those tools build answers from web pages they can read. Across the AI answers Ahrefs tracks, none of the three sites has been cited. In our own tests the tools did find the companies, and what they said tracked closely with each website.

Getting named in these answers is what generative engine optimization (GEO) means here. Most of it is putting checkable facts where AI tools can read them: license numbers and scope, the patent, sizes and grades, founding dates, locations, and clear answers to the questions buyers ask.

ChatGPT showed these ratings in its answers.

These rows show scale and aren’t a forecast. The 1% to 3% inquiry rates are a range for illustration; Joy Pipe’s real rate will come from its own tracking once analytics is in place. For reference, Octal Steel’s site already pulls about 4,300 US search visits a month, and the worldwide searches and AI answers aren’t counted in these rows at all.

Google Ads can put Joy Pipe in front of buying searches next week, while organic rankings take months. The volume here is too low for ads to carry the program, so the job of a paid test is narrow: measure how often these visitors send an inquiry, and which searches produce them.

At these prices, a capped budget of a few hundred dollars a month on 15 to 20 buying searches should be enough to learn the inquiry rate within 60 days.
